Cleaning 90% Coins
Was curious... I've got some 90% coins that have that dirt on them that many 90% coins do. Do any of you clean them so the dates are more visible or just to make them shinier or is that frowned upon?
If so, how do you clean them? |
Re: Cleaning 90% Coins
I've thought the same thing.....these have zero numis value....why not clean them up? I put a bunch in my vibratory case tumbler - a reloading device for polishing brass cases....
They came out looking like new - very shiny.....made the halves look awesome. I figured, what could it hurt at this point??? |

Re: Cleaning 90% Coins
But it's a good question. And it's at the heart of what this forum is about.

Posted a while back by Irishgold...it works! "Take a small sheet of aluminum foil and put it in a non-metalic sink or large bowl. put a half cup of Boraxo on top of the foil. Pour two gallons of boiling water over the Boraxo. put the coins in the solution, being sure they touch the foil. Leave the coins in the solution just a few seconds and remove, rinse and dry. After the solution cools it will take longer to clean, but you can reheat it. After you have cleaned a lot of coins and the heated solution is no longer cleaning as well. Start over with new materials including the aluminum." |

Lime-Away straight from the bottle and after a couple minutes wipe with a paper towel. All shiny! But don't do as I did and take a celebratory Lime-Away swig! Hello...911?:no_ma: :D |

Re: Cleaning 90% Coins
IMO it's a bad idea to do anything to circulated coins that will make them lose their natural patina. Shiney worn coins look funky & will be viewed as suspect by some people...particularly down the road in any shtf environment and/or when the price of silver increases significantly.
Soiled coins are best cleaned by putting them in a quart jar and giving them a good soaking periodically shifting them around and gently shaking them, in a solution of hot tap water and some good grease-cutting liquid dish detergent. Rinse, lay them out on a towel, pat dry, and store. |
